Bundoora History

The area now known as Bundoora was originally inhabited by the Wurundjeri people, the traditional owners of the land. The first European settler in the area was a man named James Simpson, who established a farm on the Plenty River in the 1840s. The suburb of Bundoora was named after Kelbundoora one of the leaders of the Wurundjeri people.

Bundoora developed slowly over the following decades, with the establishment of several small farms and market gardens. It remained a rural area until the 1960s when the establishment of La Trobe University and the rapid expansion of Melbourne led to the suburb being increasingly urbanized.
